From the end of the 8th century the Scandinavian Vikings in Great Britain and mainland Europe regularly appeared with their longships for raids. These ocean-going, around 20-meter-long warships had a bow at the front and rear so that they could enter or leave in both directions. Thanks to a shallow draft of just under 1.50 meters, the Vikings could also sail or row on rivers and thus raid areas deep inland. The Vikings penetrated as far as Iceland, Greenland and even as far as North America with the around 20 knots fast and agile battle ships, which are also known as dragons.
