The Hawker Hurricane Mk.IIB of No. 134 Squadron, 151 Wing, holds a unique place in the annals of World War II as part of a critical mission to support the Soviet Union during the early stages of Operation Barbarossa, the German invasion of the Soviet Union in 1941. As part of a lend-lease agreement between the United Kingdom and the Soviet Union, a contingent of Hurricanes, including the Mk.IIB variants, was dispatched to the Soviet Arctic region to bolster Soviet air defenses. In September 1941, 151 Wing, composed of No. 81 and No. 134 Squadrons, was deployed to Vaenga airfield near Murmansk, Russia, to provide fighter cover for Arctic convoys and to train Soviet pilots on operating the Hurricane.
The Mk.IIB variant of the Hurricane was particularly suited for this mission due to its enhanced armament of twelve .303 Browning machine guns and improved capabilities for ground attack roles. The Hurricane’s robust construction and ease of maintenance made it ideal for the harsh conditions of the Soviet front. A model kit comes unassembled on plastic sprues (the frames that hold the parts). You cut, glue, and paint the pieces yourself, it's a hands-on building experience that can take anywhere from a few hours to several evenings. A diecast car is a pre-built, pre-painted metal collectible ready for display straight out of the box. Both are scaled replicas, but kits are for builders who enjoy the process, and diecast is for collectors who want a finished showpiece.
Scale is the size ratio compared to the real vehicle:
1:12 — About 14". Museum-level detail, large display piece.
1:18 — About 10". Most popular collector scale. Often features opening doors, hood, and trunk.
1:24 / 1:25 — About 7". Most popular kit-building scale. Great balance of detail and size.
1:32 / 1:43 — About 4–5". Compact, ideal for larger collections.
1:64 — Hot Wheels size. Perfect for collecting by the dozens.

It depends on the kit and your preference:
- Acrylic (water-based) — Beginner-friendly, easy cleanup, low odor. Tamiya and Vallejo are popular choices.
- Enamel — Smoother finish, longer drying time, requires mineral spirits. Testors is the classic choice for Revell kits.
- Lacquer — Dries fastest, hardest finish, requires good ventilation. Tamiya TS spray cans are lacquer-based.
