- HISTORY ASPECTS:
- The Krauss-Maffei Leopard 2A7 is a variant of the Leopard 2 tank that was developed for the German Army. The Leopard 2 tank is a main battle tank that was first introduced in the late 1970s. The 2A7 variant was developed in the early 2010s, with the first tank being handed over to the German Army in December 2014.
- The 2A7 was designed to be optimized for combat in urban terrain, making it fundamentally different from other variants of the Leopard 2. A total of 20 vehicles were provided for converting, using former Dutch A6NL models returned by Canada to Germany. The upgrade included a crew-compartment cooling-system, a new auxiliary power unit, a camouflage system, a combat management and information system, and retrofitted thermal imaging.
- The tank is fitted for, but not with, additional passive side protection armor. The estimated armor protection for the hull is around ~620 mm RHAe KE, and near ~1000 mm RHAe KE for the turret. The 2A7 was also designed to fire HE ammunition.
- 14 vehicles were produced for Tank Battalion 203, 4 went to the Armoured Corps Training Centre and one vehicle went to the Technical School for Land Systems and School for Technology of the Army. The Danish Armed Forces also received a total of 44 Leopard 2A7 vehicles by 2022.
- As of now the Leopard 2A7 has not been deployed to any conflict zone, but it is considered to be a powerful and advanced tank, capable of handling various types of battle scenarios. The Panzerkampf 1:72 Armor 12174PA Krauss-Maffei Leopard 2A7 Diecast Model is a replica of the Leopard 2A7 tank used by the German Army, although it has not been used in any conflict it represents the current state of the art of German tank technology.
