The Fairchild Republic A-10 Thunderbolt II, often known as the “Warthog,” was designed specifically for close air support of ground forces, emphasizing survivability, firepower, and loiter time over the battlefield. Built around the formidable GAU-8/A Avenger 30mm cannon, the A-10 could destroy armored vehicles with devastating accuracy. Its rugged airframe, titanium “bathtub” armor protecting the pilot, and redundant flight systems allowed it to absorb significant damage and continue flying, making it one of the most durable combat aircraft ever produced.
During Operation Desert Storm in 1991, A-10s of the 23rd Tactical Fighter Wing, including aircraft from the 706th Fighter Squadron, were deployed to the Persian Gulf as part of the coalition effort to liberate Kuwait. Operating from forward bases in Saudi Arabia, these aircraft flew thousands of sorties against Iraqi armored formations, artillery positions, and supply lines. The A-10’s ability to operate at low altitude and visually identify targets made it especially effective in the desert environment, where it could engage enemy tanks and vehicles with cannon fire, Maverick missiles, rockets, and bombs.
The A-10 proved to be one of the most effective aircraft of the conflict, credited with destroying large numbers of Iraqi tanks, armored personnel carriers, and other military equipment. It also performed combat search and rescue support, battlefield interdiction, and forward air control missions. Despite facing anti-aircraft fire and surface-to-air missile threats, the aircraft’s survivability ensured that many damaged A-10s safely returned to base. The success of units like the 23rd Tactical Fighter Wing during Desert Storm cemented the A-10’s reputation as the premier close air support platform and ensured its continued service for decades beyond the conflict.

A model kit comes unassembled on plastic sprues (the frames that hold the parts). You cut, glue, and paint the pieces yourself, it's a hands-on building experience that can take anywhere from a few hours to several evenings. A diecast car is a pre-built, pre-painted metal collectible ready for display straight out of the box. Both are scaled replicas, but kits are for builders who enjoy the process, and diecast is for collectors who want a finished showpiece.
Scale is the size ratio compared to the real vehicle:
1:12 — About 14". Museum-level detail, large display piece.
1:18 — About 10". Most popular collector scale. Often features opening doors, hood, and trunk.
1:24 / 1:25 — About 7". Most popular kit-building scale. Great balance of detail and size.
1:32 / 1:43 — About 4–5". Compact, ideal for larger collections.
1:64 — Hot Wheels size. Perfect for collecting by the dozens.
1:87 — Smallest. Typically used with model train layouts.

Start with a snap-together kit, no glue or paint required. Revell and AMT both make great beginner kits in 1:25 scale, rated skill level 1 or 2. Pick a car you love, that motivation makes the build more enjoyable. Once you're comfortable, move to a cement-assembly kit with basic paint. We carry beginner kits starting under $20. It depends on the kit and your preference:
- Acrylic (water-based) — Beginner-friendly, easy cleanup, low odor. Tamiya and Vallejo are popular choices.
- Enamel — Smoother finish, longer drying time, requires mineral spirits. Testors is the classic choice for Revell kits.
- Lacquer — Dries fastest, hardest finish, requires good ventilation. Tamiya TS spray cans are lacquer-based.
Important: Don't mix paint types on the same surface without a primer coat between them. Every paint listing on our site clearly shows the type and compatible brands.
