Flat paint is what makes a model look real rather than toy-like. Gloss reflects light in a way that reads as plastic at scale — dashboards, engine bays, seat fabric, tires and undercarriage all want a flat or near-flat finish.
Tamiya's XF acrylics are the reference range here and brush beautifully straight from the bottle. Testors and Revell cover the same ground in enamel, with the harder finish that enamels give.
Flat paint dries faster than gloss and shows brush marks less, which makes it forgiving for hand-detail work. It also picks up fingerprints
and handling marks more easily — worth handling with gloves once the interior is painted.
If you need to knock down a gloss finish, a flat clear coat over the top will do it without repainting.
