As the muscle car craze took off in the late 1960s, there appeared to be a ready market that could be met by offering more inexpensive models. Plymouth responded with the 1968 Road Runner which had all of the muscle, but none of the fancy extras found on relatively expensive performance cars. The lack of frills helped keep the Road Runner's price low, which was exactly what many buyers were looking for.
